The two general points most diets focus on is

  2. Increased exercise to burn off calories.
When you count calories you pay less attention than you did before to what you eat. It is all boiled down to numbers, how many numbers you have had, how many you are allowed, how many are in that glass of wine or that bar of chocolate.

For some people counting calories may work but it often sucks the pleasure out of eating. Naturally slim people do not count calories.
You will be eating for the rest of your life, why not enjoy it AND control it?

You can do both, when you are using techniques that help you address how you think and feel about food. Slimming clubs and fad diets do not do this.

Exercise is great. Be active. I am not telling you to stop but I am telling you that going to the gym or spinning classes just to lose weight is probably not working for you.

Exercise can reduce your chances of a heart disease or Alzheimers and it can help ease or remove depression. Exercising is pretty rubbish at helping you to lose weight though, so say Dr A Malhotra, Dr T Noakes and Dr S Phinney

When you exercise you will burn about 300 calories per half hour. That means that it will take you 30 minutes to ‘burn off’ a Mars Bar. This is assuming that all calories are equal (which they aren’t). It is better to not put the Mars Bar in in the first place and save yourself 30 minutes of your life so you can do something you enjoy.

Your body adapts to exercise and burns fewer calories

The New Scientist had an article recently on how your body adapts to exercise over time and uses fewer calories. This means that you become more efficient at exercising but it means that it’s pretty rubbish for helping you to lose weight.

Most diets work on the idea that if the calories going in to your body is less than your body needs then you will use fat reserves to make up the difference. Humans are incredibly complex and to boil that process down to “put in fewer calories and you will lose weight” ignores this complex process. All calories are NOT the same and different food will have different effects on your body.

  • Mindfulness – this is about learning to be more aware of the present moment. When you are more present you are more aware of the options open to you and how you feel. Instead of saying “Stuff it, I need a chocolate bar” you could find yourself saying “In past moments like this I ate chocolate but I am aware now that it won’t help me feel any better in the long run”.
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming – This is what Paul McKenna uses every day in his work. It is about communicating more effectively with yourself and others. It can lead to deeper insights into what you used to do and how you would rather be.
  • Visualisation – “I can’t even begin to imagine being slim” is something may people say at the beginning of working with me. This is often why people have very little motivation, they have nothing they want to move towards. I can help you to use your imagination to create a clear idea of where you are going and to use that to drive yourself forwards.
  • Honesty – We Yorkshire folk are famous for calling a spade a spade. That is exactly what I do. You are fat. Not ‘big boned’ and probably don’t have a thyroid problem. You don’t want to be fat so I will talk about how you can take responsibility for your thoughts, your actions and your weight.
  • Coaching – Many people succeed in reducing their weight when they have a personal trainer or a dietician but once this work stops the progress tends to stop as well. This is because they weren’t given the tools to deal with their thoughts and feelings. They only focused on exercise or how much of what food they were putting in.
